Able completed his Bachelor of Nursing in 2018 and, like all fresh graduates, attempted to make inroads into the workforce he had been training for over the past four years. After limited success in securing a new graduate position in his desired area, Able felt deflated, as there would be another year before applications would reopen, and he would be out of practice by then.

After discussing his dilemma with a colleague, he was fortunate enough to receive the suggestion to apply for Agency Nursing work. Able soon decided that working as an Agency RN would provide him with the flexibility he was after, and it might also enhance his skills and network due to the variety of work and locations that the job had to offer.

In no time at all, Able was working as an agency RN, performing the tasks he had been trained for and loved. He traveled around NSW, visiting many different sites in both aged care and acute care over two years, thoroughly enjoying the work and gaining valuable experience.

After two years, Able began to find the working environment as an agency nurse extremely demanding, feeling that he had limited support or appreciation from the organization’s administration and leadership team. He also noticed that his colleagues were experiencing similar feelings, which he found to be quite disheartening given the remarkable work they were doing.

With the challenges Able faced as an agency nurse fresh in his mind, he concluded that while an agency position had potential, it was up to him to turn his vision into reality. This realization led to the founding of AZ Agency.

Initially, AZ Agency was a self-fulfilling sole-trader operation, created with the purpose of helping Able maintain a flexible work-life balance and avoid the pitfalls of working for larger, disconnected agencies. When Able shared his experiences, philosophy, and vision about agency work with colleagues, people quickly expressed interest in joining and being a part of the AZ journey, to which Able readily agreed.
Within just 12 months, AZ Agency experienced rapid growth, expanding to over 90 staff. This was because like-minded nurses were finally receiving the respect, support, and appreciation they deserved from Able and his team of administrators.

Able continues to expand his vision and operations, keeping his core values and practical working experiences at the forefront of his mind. While overseeing AZ Agency, Able also maintains his professional nursing skills, often working alongside his staff during shifts. He believes that genuine leadership involves understanding the people, the work, and the environment.
